![]() ![]() Photographs of this painting in progress show that Henri Matisse started with a casual pose and a realistic rendering. Melissa Kerr, from Masterpieces from the Philadelphia Museum of Art: Impressionism and Modern Art (2007), p. Only gradually did the present state of the painting evolve, with its flat picture plane, Lydia's rather inexpressive face, and her boldly exaggerated right hand encircled in beads. The first version of the picture shows a relatively naturalistic composition of a woman leaning to her side, and is full of much greater detail and depth. Ten photographs (now in the Museum's archives) taken over the three months that Matisse worked on the picture prove that this was a hard-won solution. The artist considered Woman in Blue his best picture of 1937, and, indeed, the simplicity of the composition is striking, with its restricted palette of red, yellow, blue, black, and white. The resulting concoction, which appears in several paintings of this period, was intended to be worn only in the studio and was held together by loose stitches and pins. Using fabric that Matisse had bought in Paris, Lydia made the sumptuous violet-blue dress herself. Like many of the portraits Matisse painted in the late 1930s, this work focuses on a dramatic costume rather than on the personality of the sitter. ![]() In 1950, Matisse was awarded the grand prize at the Venice Biennale."The model for Henri Matisse's Woman in Blue was Lydia Delectorskaya, a beautiful young Russian émigrée who worked for the artist during the last twenty years of his life. During the 1930s, he was commissioned to illustrate books, as well as design murals for the Barnes Foundation of Philadelphia and the Chapel of Saint-Marie du Rosaire in Vence (near Cannes, France). In 1925, Matisse was awarded the French Legion of Honor. He is said to have been influenced by Neo-Impressionist painters Cezanne, Van Gogh and Gauguin, as well as pointillist artists Signac and Henri Edmond Cross. In his later years, Matisse experimented with cut-out collages. Matisse was most recognized for his human figure, still life and nude subjects, as well as his impressionism style and work in sculptures, monotypes, aquatints, lithography, etchings, drypoints and woodcuts. During the 1890s, he also attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Gustave Moreau. Around a year later, Matisse relocated to France where he received his formal art education at the Academie Julian. Matisse originally began his career in law however, bedridden after an appendectomy, he began to take up painting, using art supplies his mother gave him.
